In a bizarre twist of desperation, an unemployed man from Ganpatinagar, Mankapur, has been arrested for a series of chain-snatching incidents he allegedly committed to pay court-ordered alimony to his ex-wife.
The accused, Kanhaiya Narayan Baurashi, was caught by the city crime branch while probing a robbery involving a 74-year-old woman, Jayshree Jaykumar Gade, who had her gold chain snatched in Manishnagar on February 22. The case was initially registered at the Beltarodi Police Station.
Investigators used technical surveillance and local intelligence to zero in on Kanhaiya, who later confessed to the crime. Under interrogation, he admitted to four chain-snatching robberies, all driven by the need to pay Rs 6,000 monthly alimony mandated by the court.
Out of work for two years and remarried during the pandemic, Kanhaiya resorted to crime to make ends meet. He had sold the stolen jewellery to Amardeep Krishnarao Nakhate, owner of Shri Sai Jewellers, who was also arrested for buying the stolen gold.
Police recovered a motorcycle, a mobile phone, and 10 grams of gold grains worth Rs 1.85 lakh. Both Kanhaiya and Nakhate are now in police custody.
Authorities are continuing their investigation and verifying if the duo is linked to other unsolved thefts in the region.
