by Ananya Mehta

Nagaur Police on Thursday arrested four persons from New Delhi, including a chartered accountant, for allegedly extorting Rs 34 lakh from a retired doctor in a “digital arrest” scam.

According to Nagaur SP Roshan Meena, the accused have been identified as Imran Husain (40) of Brahmpuri, northeast Delhi; Vivek Kumar (35) of Karawal Nagar, New Delhi; Salman (27), also from northeast Delhi; and Yogendra (39) of Delhi. DSP (Cyber) Dharam Poonia said Salman, a chartered accountant, allegedly managed the siphoned funds.

The retired doctor, a resident of Gotan in Nagaur, filed an FIR on January 21, stating that he received a call from fraudsters posing as Bengaluru police officers. The callers accused him of involvement in human trafficking and sending obscene messages to women, claiming a case had been registered against him.

The fraudsters then placed the victim under a so-called “digital arrest” via video call, intimidating him. Fearing legal consequences, the doctor prematurely broke a fixed deposit worth Rs 34 lakh and transferred the funds into bank accounts controlled by the accused.

Investigations revealed that the bank accounts used in the scam were based in New Delhi. Two police teams were dispatched to trace and apprehend the suspects. During the probe, officers discovered that the accused allegedly opened bank accounts and shell companies in their names and sold them to other cybercriminals, facilitating digital arrest scams, investment frauds, and similar offences.

Police confirmed that over Rs 5 lakh of the defrauded Rs 34 lakh has been frozen. A case was registered at the cyber police station under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the IT Act, and the investigation is ongoing.
