The Mylapore police arrested two men, Surya (19) and Mukesh alias Ajay (25), for luring a 23-year-old victim through a dating app, threatening him with a knife, and extorting money before stealing his phone.

According to police, the victim was called to North Mada Street past midnight on Sunday and was taken near a public toilet, where the duo confronted and assaulted him. They snatched his phone, transferred Rs 380 from his account, and extorted an additional Rs 1,000 by coercing the victim to call a friend. The suspects also recorded a video to blackmail the victim if he reported the crime.

Following the complaint, a special police team tracked down Surya and Mukesh, seizing the knife and stolen phone. Investigations revealed that both accused have multiple criminal cases, including robbery, narcotics, and sexual harassment. After interrogation, they were produced in court and remanded to judicial custody.

Earlier in April, the Greater Chennai Police had sought a ban on the dating app Grindr, citing its misuse by drug peddlers to sell methamphetamine.
