Kasaragod police arrested two men, Muzammil (19), a driver, and Abdulla K (40), on charges of illegal cattle trafficking. The incident unfolded on Tuesday when PSI Santosh BP and his team were on patrol near Bellare police station. They acted on a tip-off about cattle being transported for slaughter in a pickup vehicle heading towards Kerala via Nettaru in Bellare village.
The team intercepted the pickup at Nettaru Junction, Sullia taluk, as it moved from Bellare towards Perlampady. Upon stopping the vehicle, Muzammil admitted to carrying cattle. Police discovered five buffaloes, each about three years old, tied up in the cargo area. When asked for permits or veterinary certificates, Muzammil confessed to having none. He revealed that the buffaloes were bought from Hassan market by his acquaintance Jalaluddin from Mayyala and were being taken to Kerala for slaughter and sale.
The vehicle is valued at approximately Rs 3 lakh, while the buffaloes are worth around Rs 50,000 in total. Authorities registered a case under Sections 5, 6, 7, and 12 of the Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Act at Bellare police station.
