Local musician Paritosh Sarkar was arrested by Tripura Police after 173.570 kilograms of dried ganja were recovered from his residence in the Konaban area of Sepahijala district. The seized contraband is estimated to be worth over Rs10 lakh in the illegal market.
The arrest, made on Sunday, followed a tip-off received by Debajit Chatterjee, Officer-in-Charge of Madhupur police station. Police swiftly coordinated with the Tripura State Rifles (TSR) and the Intelligence Department to carry out a raid on Sarkar’s residence.
Upon spotting the approaching officers, Sarkar attempted to flee but was quickly apprehended. Authorities discovered ganja hidden beneath a pile of sand in the courtyard, inside his house, and on a hill behind the property — making it one of the largest hauls in the region in recent months.
A case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Officer-in-Charge Chatterjee confirmed Sarkar’s involvement in drug trafficking and said the investigation is ongoing.
Preliminary findings suggest Sarkar may have worked with local youths, potentially forming a larger drug distribution network. “We are probing deeper and hope to identify and arrest others involved,” said Chatterjee.
Police emphasized that the community plays a critical role in combating the spread of narcotics and urged residents to report any suspicious activities. More arrests are expected as the investigation continues.
This case highlights the persistent threat of drug trafficking in Tripura, and the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to safeguard the community.
