In a major breakthrough, the Mumbai Crime Branch arrested Vanita alias Asha Shailendra Gaikwad, a domestic help accused of committing over 50 thefts across Mumbai, Thane, and Navi Mumbai. The 59-year-old suspect, known for targeting affluent households, would join homes as a maid, steal valuables, and flee within days of starting her work.
The Crime Branch revealed that Vanita had stolen crores of rupees during her criminal activities. Investigations showed that she was adept at evading detection by frequently changing her residence and identity. She would move from one household to another, often under different aliases, to avoid being traced by the police.
In her most recent incident, Vanita joined the household of 59-year-old Zakir Ahmedbaba Mate in Vashi Sector 9 as a maid. Within just four days, she fled after stealing jewelry and cash worth Rs3.5 lakh. A theft case was immediately registered at the Vashi Police Station.
Acting on a tip-off, the Crime Branch Unit 7 traced Vanita to Mahul Gaon, Chembur, where she was hiding at the RCF Mhada Colony. A team led by Inspector Atmaji Sawant and Sub-Inspector Kale laid a trap and arrested Vanita. During her interrogation, she admitted to the theft in Vashi, as well as other criminal activities.
Vanita’s modus operandi involved targeting upscale residential areas, building rapport with watchmen, and inquiring about families in need of domestic help. After gaining employment, she would map out the valuables in the house and seize the first opportunity to steal cash and jewelry. Her ability to constantly change her identity and provide false addresses made it challenging for law enforcement to track her down.
The police are continuing their investigation into her extensive criminal activities, and more cases may emerge as the probe progresses.
