A dramatic police operation spanning multiple states has led to the arrest of two men accused of stealing Rs 45 lakh in cash from a Mumbai Chartered Accountant (CA). The Govandi police, supported by intelligence inputs and covert fieldwork, traced the suspects to Bihar and recovered Rs 36,35,600 in cash.
The complainant, 58-year-old CA Tejprakash Dangi from Bhakti Park, Wadala, had employed drivers Nitesh Kumar Mahato and his cousin Rahul Kumar Mahato. The duo allegedly stole a bag containing Rs 45 lakh that was kept in trust inside the complainant’s car.
The theft occurred on September 19 around 8 pm. Soon after, the CA filed an FIR with the Govandi police.
Under the leadership of Senior Police Inspector Pandharinath Sawant, a special team was formed to swiftly investigate the case. The team conducted extensive searches across Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar, ultimately locating the suspects hiding in Samastipur district, Bihar.
The operation involved six days of field surveillance and technical investigation before the two accused were arrested. Rs 36,35,600 of the stolen money was recovered from their possession. The suspects were brought to Mumbai under transit remand and remanded to police custody for further investigation.
The remaining amount is still missing, and the accused will be questioned to trace the missing money’s whereabouts.
According to Dangi’s statement, Nitesh Kumar had worked as his driver for eight months and had gained his trust. He then recommended his cousin Rahul Kumar, who was hired as a peon. The duo had been living in a rented room in Shantinagar, Wadala, for three months before the theft.
