Noida police on Saturday arrested four people, including the son and father duo Mukul Sharma (25) and Ajay Sharma (48), in connection with the murder of money changer Ompal Bhati during a foreign currency exchange deal gone wrong.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police Yamuna Prasad, the crime took place on June 11 after Mukul Sharma and his associate Akash Upadhyay (24) lured Bhati to a rented house in Sector 18, pretending they wanted to exchange Rs 7 lakh for Canadian currency.
To build credibility, Akash even withdrew Rs 3 lakh from his account to show as part of the transaction. However, once Bhati arrived with the foreign currency, the duo held him at gunpoint and tried to snatch the bag. When Bhati resisted, he was shot dead.
Following the crime, Mukul and Akash fled and took refuge at the residence of Aryan Yadav (25) in Delhi, allegedly on the advice of Mukul’s father, Ajay Sharma. Aryan has also been arrested for sheltering the accused.
Police recovered Rs 10.3 lakh in Indian and foreign currency, two pistols, live and empty cartridges, two mobile phones, and a motorcycle used in the crime.
DCP Prasad confirmed that all four accused are now in custody and further investigation is underway.
