In a significant breakthrough, Dhubri police apprehended Mukesh Gowala, the key accused in a daring robbery at the State Bank of India’s Golakganj branch, from Fatapukur in Jalpaiguri, West Bengal.
The robbery occurred when the victim was conversing with a bank employee, and Gowala silently slipped in, grabbed a cash-filled bag, and escaped swiftly. The act was caught on CCTV cameras, which later became crucial in identifying and tracking the suspect.
An FIR was lodged at the Golakganj Police Station, following which a specialized investigation team, supervised directly by Superintendent of Police Navin Singh, launched a manhunt.
Already linked to multiple thefts in the region, Gowala was traced to West Bengal, where police executed a successful raid to capture him. Authorities now believe this arrest could unravel a larger interstate theft ring operating between Assam and Bengal.
Police have hailed the arrest as a milestone in their crackdown on organized crime along the Assam-Bengal border.
