Police in Shopian, South Kashmir, have arrested Mudassar Hassan Shah for allegedly withdrawing money from a deceased individual’s bank account. A case has been registered against him as part of an ongoing investigation into financial irregularities at a Jammu and Kashmir Bank branch in Tarkawangam.

The matter came to light after a woman, Zarifa, reported that her late father Mohammad Yousuf Shah’s bank account had been emptied on January 14, 2019, a day after his death on January 13. The withdrawn amount, approximately Rs 5 lakh, was allegedly transferred to accounts linked to the accused’s relatives.

Investigation revealed that Mudassar Hassan Shah fraudulently withdrew the funds. FIR No. 31/2026 has been registered against him and his brother, Ashiq Hussain Shah, a Patwari and resident of Tarkawangam, under relevant sections of law. Ashiq Hussain Shah had previously been arrested by the Anti-Corruption Bureau in December 2025 for allegedly accepting a Rs 25,000 bribe, highlighting a pattern of alleged misconduct in the family.

Officials stated that the case is part of a wider probe into multiple accounts at the bank where funds were reported missing, including an earlier arrest of the branch manager and attachment of his property. Police confirmed that further investigation is ongoing, and additional arrests or revelations cannot be ruled out.

Locals welcomed the police action and called for strict punishment and recovery of illegally acquired funds. Authorities assured that all financial trails and the involvement of other individuals are being carefully examined.
