by Sophia Bennett

Ethel Cain, a Mound Bayou woman, was sentenced today after pleading guilty to submitting fraudulent COVID-19 grant applications to the Mississippi Back to Business Grant Program. Cain was convicted on two counts of false statements and representations and one count of wire fraud for submitting nearly $400,000 worth of fraudulent and duplicate applications.

The fraudster’s actions not only violated the public trust but also prevented legitimate businesses in Bolivar County from accessing funding they were eligible for. The fraudulent claims undermined the state’s efforts to help businesses during the pandemic.

Cain was sentenced by Bolivar County Circuit Court Judge Linda F. Coleman to five years of probation on each count, with the sentences running concurrently. Additionally, Cain is required to pay restitution of $500 to the Crime Victim’s Compensation Fund as part of her sentence.

This case serves as a reminder of the continued vigilance required to safeguard public funds and ensure that those who engage in fraudulent activities are held accountable.
