Monifa Taffe-Hylton Arrested in Large-Scale Vehicle Scam

Brampton Woman Faces 40 Charges for Trafficking Stolen Cars

by Amelia Crawford

A Brampton woman, Monifa Taffe-Hylton, has been arrested and faces nearly 40 charges related to a large-scale vehicle scam, which involved the trafficking of stolen cars and the use of forged documents. The 25-year-old was charged with 36 counts of uttering forged documents and trafficking stolen goods.

Taffe-Hylton is allegedly involved in the scam with her brother, Milton Hylton, who was arrested earlier this month on 168 auto crime charges. Police allege Milton Hylton ran an unlicensed car dealership and used “loopholes” in the ServiceOntario system to facilitate illegal vehicle transactions.

According to Peel police, the siblings used fraudulent practices to re-vin stolen vehicles. “Re-vinning” refers to altering the Vehicle Identification Number (V.I.N.) of a stolen vehicle and replacing it with one from another vehicle to make it appear legitimate.

While some of the stolen cars have been recovered, many are still on the road. The authorities continue to investigate the scam, which spans multiple Ontario jurisdictions. Police are urging the public to assist in locating more victims and stolen vehicles, with additional arrests expected in the coming days.

This ongoing investigation highlights the scope of the crime and its impact on vehicle safety and theft prevention efforts across Ontario.
