In a major crackdown, the Anti-Narcotics Cell of Thane Police arrested two individuals for possession of 152.5 grams of mephedrone (MD), a synthetic drug, worth Rs25,88,820, intended for sale in Thane.

The accused have been identified as:

Moin Mohammad Arif Nirban (29)

Mohammad Muzamil Liyaqat Ansari (25)
Both are residents of Mira Road.

The arrests took place on January 25, after Police Constable Amol Desai received a tip-off that two suspects would be arriving near Happy Valley Circle in Manpada to sell contraband. Acting swiftly, Desai alerted his superiors, and a police team was formed to set up a trap.

The suspects were apprehended on the spot, and a total of 152.5 grams of mephedrone was recovered from their possession.

Following the seizure, a case was registered under Sections 8(c), 22(c), and 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The duo was produced before the NDPS court in Thane and has been remanded to police custody for further investigation.

Police are now investigating the source of the drugs, potential buyers, and whether more contraband is hidden elsewhere. Authorities have intensified surveillance and are not ruling out the possibility of a larger drug network being involved.
