A teenager, Mohammed ‘Umar’ Khan, has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for the murder of 15-year-old Harvey Willgoose. Harvey, a Year 9 pupil, was fatally stabbed during lunch at All Saints Catholic High School in Sheffield in February.
During the attack, other students fled in panic, with some locking themselves in a school cupboard. The court heard that Khan had previously clashed with Harvey in class.
Harvey’s sister, Sophie Willgoose, described the “devastating impact” the murder has had on her family, saying: “Words will never be enough to capture just how special Harvey was… We are struggling to comprehend that he was murdered in the most cruel and inhumane way.”
Chris Hartley of the Crown Prosecution Service emphasized that Khan deliberately attacked Harvey, warning teenagers about the serious consequences of carrying knives.
Detective Inspector Joe Hackworthy from South Yorkshire Police described the trial as a “heartbreaking reminder of the devastation knife crime causes in our communities,” noting the lasting impact on families and communities.
