District Superintendent of Police Rohan Jagadish on Thursday announced that the high-value theft at Shantadurga Jewellers, located near the city’s Tontadarya Math, was solved within just six hours, with stolen gold worth Rs80 lakh successfully recovered.

Addressing the media at the Town Police Station, the SP said the accused has been identified as Mohammad Husain, son of Mohammad Mustafa Siddiqui, a native of Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Police revealed that the suspect had been staying at a lodge adjacent to Shantadurga Jewellers for nearly a week prior to the incident.

According to investigators, the accused used a gas cutter to break through the iron bars of a third-floor window, gained entry into the shop, and fled with gold ornaments and valuables.

“Immediately after the theft, police intensified the investigation by analyzing CCTV footage from the surrounding areas and scrutinising lodge records. These efforts indicated that the accused was attempting to flee towards Maharashtra,” SP Jagadish said.

Based on shared intelligence, police teams from Solapur and Sangli districts assisted in tracking down the suspect, who was arrested near Kinni Naka. All stolen valuables were recovered, and the gas cutter along with other tools used in the burglary were seized, the SP added.
