The quiet village of Gollapally in Kondapur mandal, Telangana, has come under the spotlight after Assam Police arrested 19-year-old Mofijul Islam, an Assam native, from a local farmhouse.

Islam was nabbed as part of Operation Ghost SIM, a nationwide crackdown launched by Assam Police after Operation Sindoor. The operation aims to track individuals using fraudulent SIM cards linked to cybercrime and anti-national activities.

Islam, arrested on May 14, is accused of using a “ghost SIM” card—unauthorized and untraceable mobile connections. According to a press conference held by the Assam DGP, the SIMs were used to create WhatsApp accounts with OTPs being routed back to Pakistan. Authorities believe these were leveraged for cybercrimes and possibly anti-India operations.

His arrest has left the residents of Gollapally stunned. The operation was carried out in coordination with Sangareddy Police in Telangana.

Islam is one of seven individuals arrested so far across India in connection with the probe.
