Lagos, Nigeria — The Lagos State Police Command has arrested 35-year-old Modupeola Bamisade for allegedly defrauding more than 100 people of over N500 million through an online gadget scam.
Police said Bamisade posed as an online dealer of Apple products, including iPhones and iPads, offering them at heavily discounted prices to attract buyers. The scheme reportedly relied on social media influencers to promote these sales, with discounts advertised at up to 50 percent.
Investigators found that many victims made payments for gadgets but never received them. The suspect allegedly provided repeated excuses to delay deliveries or avoided fulfilling orders entirely.
According to police sources, the scam had been ongoing for some time. During interrogation, Bamisade admitted using influencers to reach potential buyers. One influencer reportedly alerted authorities after receiving repeated complaints from customers, which ultimately led to her arrest.
Several victims visited the police command following her detention. One victim claimed to have paid N1 million for a phone that was never delivered, while others described being misled by false notifications and dispatch calls.
The investigation is ongoing, and police are urging the public to verify online sellers carefully before making payments.
