Assam Rifles and BSF bust major methamphetamine drug racket near Bangladesh border
Security forces in Mizoram and Tripura have seized methamphetamine tablets worth Rs 34.73 crore and arrested three drug peddlers in coordinated operations, officials said on Thursday.
According to a Defence spokesperson, the Assam Rifles launched a targeted operation in the Zote area of eastern Mizoram’s Champhai district based on secret intelligence. During the raid, approximately 11 kg of methamphetamine tablets, valued at around Rs 33.33 crore, were recovered. The drugs were handed over to the Excise and Narcotics Department, Champhai.
In a parallel operation in Tripura’s Sepahijala district near the Bangladesh border, the Border Security Force (BSF), in collaboration with Tripura Police, seized 14,000 meth tablets worth about Rs 1.4 crore. Acting on intelligence, the BSF intercepted a red Chevrolet Aveo car in the Salpokhar area and discovered 70 packets of the narcotics.
Three suspects were arrested from a nearby house: Sarfraj Ahmed (Meerut, UP), Jubair (Moradabad, UP), and Nazrul Islam (Cooch Behar, WB). The contraband and the accused were handed over to Tripura Police for further legal proceedings.
Officials suspect that the drugs were smuggled from Myanmar, passing through Mizoram and southern Assam, before entering Tripura and then being trafficked into Bangladesh.
