A 21-year-old Missouri woman, Alyssa Wehmeyer, is being held in jail after being charged with felony abuse or neglect of a child resulting in death. Wehmeyer, from Cape Girardeau, is currently in Scott County Jail with a $100,000 cash-only bond.

The charge follows an investigation by the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Troop E Criminal Investigations Unit, which was requested by the Cape Girardeau Police Department after the death of Wehmeyer’s 1-year-old child was deemed suspicious. According to court records, Wehmeyer is accused of neglecting her child by failing to provide food for more than 36 hours. Additionally, she reportedly left the child unattended in its crib for nearly 19 hours.

Wehmeyer is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday morning for her first hearing. The investigation continues as authorities address the circumstances surrounding this tragic case.
