In a shocking incident, 22-year-old college student Mimdeep Nath has been arrested for the alleged murder of his mother, Manju Rani Nath (55), in the Lala area of Hailakandi district on Sunday morning.

The tragedy unfolded around 8:30 a.m. in Umednagar, Ward No. 3, following a domestic argument that reportedly turned violent. According to a complaint filed by the victim’s brother, Tapan Nath, the dispute escalated when Mimdeep allegedly dragged his mother to a nearby pond and forcibly held her underwater until she drowned.

Alarmed by the commotion, neighbors rushed to the scene and pulled Manju Rani out of the water. She was taken to Lala Primary Health Centre, where she was declared dead on arrival.

Lala Police arrived swiftly and arrested Mimdeep Nath at the scene. The body was later shifted to SK Roy Civil Hospital in Hailakandi for a post-mortem examination.

Police sources revealed that the family had recently suffered another tragedy — Manju Rani’s husband, Mannik Nath, a police constable, passed away months earlier. Mimdeep was the eldest child of the couple.

A case has been registered, and a thorough investigation is underway to uncover the full details behind the horrific crime.
