MILWAUKEE, WI — Demetric Scott, 52, faces multiple charges including identity theft and witness intimidation after admitting to sending threatening letters targeting President Donald Trump under the name of an immigrant, Ramon Morales Reyes, in an attempt to have him deported and avoid testimony against Scott in a criminal trial.
Scott’s scheme unfolded while he awaited trial on armed robbery and battery charges. He sent letters to the Wisconsin Attorney General, Milwaukee Police Chief, and the ICE office containing threats against Trump, falsely using Morales Reyes’ name and return address.
Authorities initially arrested Morales Reyes, 54, after the Department of Homeland Security claimed he had sent a letter threatening the president. However, Morales Reyes’ lawyers disproved this, highlighting he cannot read or write English and was likely set up.
Recorded phone calls from jail captured Scott coordinating the plan to frame Morales Reyes, hoping that his deportation would lead to dismissal of Scott’s criminal case.
Scott admitted in a police interview that he authored the letters, stating it was his “simplest way” to remove Morales Reyes from the situation.
Morales Reyes remains detained at an ICE facility and faces immigration proceedings, though his attorneys continue to fight on his behalf.
Scott is scheduled for an initial court appearance regarding the charges linked to the letter plot.
