Mikeem & Garnett Gaines Charged in 2023 Augusta Murder

Mother and son arrested for deadly Lumpkin Road shooting

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – A mother and son have been arrested and charged with murder in connection to a 2023 fatal shooting on Lumpkin Road in Augusta, Georgia.

According to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, 22-year-old Mikeem Gaines and his 45-year-old mother, Garnett Gaines, were taken into custody Tuesday evening. The arrests were made with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Southeastern Fugitive Task Force.

Deadly Shooting on June 17, 2023

Deputies responded around 8:06 a.m. on June 17, 2023, to the 2800 block of Lumpkin Road following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, they found a 42-year-old man, James Brinson, suffering from at least one gunshot wound.

Brinson was transported to Wellstar MCG, where he was pronounced dead at 8:43 a.m., according to the Richmond County Coroner’s Office.

Both Mikeem and Garnett Gaines have been charged with one count of murder each and are being held at the Charles B. Webster Detention Center.

Part of a Larger Violence Crisis in CSRA

The shooting is one of over 100 violent deaths in the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA) in recent years. Law enforcement agencies on both sides of the Savannah River have been grappling with the growing wave of violent crime.

Authorities say many of the victims and suspects are young men, and a significant portion of the violence is linked to gang activity.
