CANTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A 30-year-old man from Canton Township has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of his wife, Yu Zhao.
Police were called to a residence on Pinehurst Drive around 3:30 a.m. on Monday, September 8, after receiving a report of a woman not breathing. Upon arrival, emergency responders found Zhao unresponsive inside the home. She was transported to a local hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
Investigators believe that Michael Shen, Zhao’s husband, strangled her around 1 a.m. on the same day.
On Thursday, September 11, Shen was formally charged with first-degree murder. He was denied bond and is currently being held in jail. His next court appearance is scheduled for September 19.
If convicted, Shen faces a mandatory life sentence without the possibility of parole.
The case remains under active investigation by Canton Township authorities.
