KRABI, Thailand — A Canadian man was arrested Friday after allegedly stealing a car from outside a police station in Krabi, prompting a high-speed police chase involving more than 30 officers.
Police identified the suspect as Michael Jame Parton, 43, a Canadian national. Authorities said Parton stole a vehicle parked outside Mueang Krabi Police Station and fled along Utarakit Road.
Officers quickly launched a coordinated pursuit, deploying roadblocks and working with local officials to prevent the suspect from escaping. The chase ended near a convenience store close to Krabi Hospital, where police intercepted the vehicle and arrested Parton without resistance.
The vehicle’s owner, Nattapong Suwan, 35, told police he had been waiting to pick up his child when a foreign man entered his car without permission. Feeling unsafe, Nattapong drove directly to the police station to seek help. While he was speaking with officers, the suspect allegedly took advantage of the situation and drove off with the vehicle.
Police transported Parton back to the station for questioning. Authorities said they are investigating whether he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the incident. Immigration Bureau officials are also expected to review his visa status and background.
The case has generated widespread discussion online, with some Thai social media users criticizing what they view as weak penalties for crimes committed by foreign nationals. Others placed blame on the vehicle owner for leaving the car unattended with a stranger inside.
As of now, police have not announced formal charges or potential penalties. Officials said the investigation is ongoing.
