KENLY, N.C. — A Johnston County man is facing felony charges after allegedly stealing thousands of dollars’ worth of scrap metal from a property on Pollock Road.

Michael Wayne Mitchell, 45, of Joyce Drive in Middlesex, was arrested on August 8 by the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office. He is charged with felony larceny and felony obtaining property by false pretense.

The investigation began after a homeowner reported that approximately $3,000 worth of scrap metal had been stolen from a shelter on their property on July 31. Security camera footage captured an image of the suspect, who the victim later identified as Mitchell.

Detectives allege that Mitchell transported the stolen metal to a recycling facility in Wilson County, where it was sold for profit.

Mitchell was booked into the Johnston County Detention Center in Smithfield, where he remains held on a $40,000 secured bond.
