Michael James Moretz Charged with Double Murder in Morganton Fire

Two victims found dead after house fire in Burke County, NC

MORGANTON, N.C. — Michael James Moretz, 51, has been charged with two counts of felony murder following a fatal fire at a home on Swink Street.

Authorities found Michael Curtis Hallyburton, 63, and Joseph Kincaid Byrd Jr., 76, deceased on September 5 after the fire. Initially classified as a death investigation, the case has since been upgraded to a double homicide.

Moretz was arrested Monday and is scheduled to appear in court Thursday. The Burke County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the incident.
