Michael Haywood Arrested in Waldorf for Animal Cruelty, Firearm Charges

Suspect accused of inhumane treatment and illegal firearm possession

by Sophia Bennett

WALDORF, Md. — On September 2, Michael Haywood, 47, of Waldorf, was arrested following a search warrant executed by the Charles County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division, with assistance from several law enforcement teams and Animal Control Officers. The warrant stemmed from an investigation into animal cruelty and suspected dogfighting at a residence on Twinbrook Drive.

Animal Control initially alerted detectives after receiving complaints about numerous dogs being kept in deplorable conditions. During the search, five dogs—likely Pitbulls—were found living in squalor, including three confined in urine- and feces-soaked crates inside a garage and two chained outside without adequate shelter. The dogs were severely underweight, bore cuts, and some wore heavy chains nearly equal to their body weight. They were immediately taken to an emergency veterinary clinic for treatment.

Investigators recovered evidence indicative of dogfighting, including a treadmill baited with dog toys and large amounts of antibiotics. Four firearms were also seized from the home, which Haywood is prohibited from possessing.

Haywood was charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, and related offenses. He was released on personal recognizance pending further investigation. Additional charges related to dogfighting are expected as the investigation continues.

Detective K. Dunn is leading the ongoing investigation.
