MIAMI (WSVN) — A 16-year-old boy has been arrested and will be charged as an adult after allegedly shooting his 13-year-old stepbrother during an argument at their Miami home, according to police.
Authorities say Landon Lumpkin faces charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, possession of a firearm by a minor, and grand theft of a firearm after the incident, which left the younger teen hospitalized with a gunshot wound.
According to investigators, the shooting happened after the victim returned from school and confronted Lumpkin for wearing his clothes. Lumpkin reportedly pulled out a .45-caliber Glock 21, which had been reported stolen six to seven days earlier, and aimed it at his stepbrother “to scare him.” The gun discharged, striking the 13-year-old in the left shoulder.
“He arrived home from school, saw the stepbrother in some sort of clothing item that belonged to him and told the stepbrother to remove the clothing, at which point in time that stepbrother, who is a 16-year-old male, produced a firearm and fired a single shot,” said Officer Kiara Delva of the City of Miami Police.
The wounded teen was rushed by his mother to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.
Following the shooting, detectives obtained a search warrant for the family’s home near North Miami Avenue and 31st Street, where they recovered the stolen Glock, confirmed to be the firearm used in the incident.
Lumpkin was arrested, questioned at Miami Police Headquarters in the presence of his mother, and later booked into juvenile detention. However, due to the violent nature of the crime, police confirmed he will be charged as an adult.
“The second you turn it to a violent matter, you pull out a firearm, a knife, or whatever sort, be mindful that you can, in fact, be charged criminally as an adult, even if you are a juvenile,” Delva warned.
