JACKSON, MS – Taruars Santae Grace, a 46-year-old woman from Meridian, has pleaded guilty to stealing Social Security benefits intended for two elderly victims, amounting to a total of $25,364. Grace admitted to diverting Social Security Administration (SSA) retirement benefits into bank accounts under her control and spending the funds for personal use, despite knowing that she was not entitled to the money.

The theft was uncovered when Grace’s actions were investigated, leading to her indictment by a federal grand jury in August 2024. On Wednesday, she pled guilty to the charge of theft of government funds.

Grace faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. She is scheduled for sentencing on February 11, 2025, where a federal district court judge will determine her sentence, taking into account the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other relevant factors.

U.S. Attorney Todd W. Gee for the Southern District of Mississippi and Special Agent in Charge Rodregas “Rod” Owens of the Social Security Administration Office of Inspector General – Atlanta Field Division made the announcement. The investigation is being conducted by the Social Security Administration Office of the Inspector General.

Grace’s guilty plea highlights the ongoing efforts to combat fraud against vulnerable populations, particularly the elderly, and serves as a reminder of the severe consequences of stealing government benefits.
