ALBUQUERQUE, NM – A man and woman are facing child abuse and drug charges after authorities discovered drug paraphernalia and unsecured weapons inside an infant’s bedroom during a welfare check.
On September 10, deputies from the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office and investigators from the Children, Youth and Families Department (CYFD) responded to an anonymous tip about possible child endangerment at the home of Melody Abrams and Anthony Garcia.
Upon arrival, deputies observed narcotics-related items in plain view near the child. A search warrant was then issued, and additional disturbing findings were made in the infant’s bedroom, including:
Burnt foil, glass pipes, syringes, smoking straws, and lighters
Knives, machetes, and hatchets, all within the child’s reach
Court documents reveal that Anthony Garcia admitted both he and Abrams were fentanyl users.
Both suspects were arrested and booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center. They face charges of:
Child abuse
Possession of drug paraphernalia
The investigation is ongoing.
