Just three days into his new job, 24-year-old Mehul Garg, a delivery boy from Udaipur, Rajasthan, was arrested for stealing 17 bags of gold ornaments worth Rs2.9 crore. The theft occurred after Garg collected the valuables from multiple jewellery shops in South Mumbai’s Zaveri Bazar, which were meant to be delivered to clients.

Garg, employed by Jai Ambe Courier Services on August 2, disappeared with the gold consignments by August 5. He was arrested from his residence in Udaipur on Tuesday, where police recovered the stolen jewellery hidden in his house.

The complaint was filed by his employer, Sahil Kothari (29), after he failed to trace Garg. “He pretended his phone was about to die and then vanished,” said police officials. Kothari revealed that Garg had persistently requested to be rehired after working for him previously between 2023 and March 2024.

Police said Garg had planned the theft in advance, using information shared in a WhatsApp group managed by the courier company detailing the movement of valuable consignments. “He joined with the sole motive of stealing,” said an officer. Garg has been charged with criminal breach of trust and will be produced in Andheri court on Thursday.
