Two off-duty guardsmen from the Meghalaya Secretariat Home Guards successfully prevented a generator theft near the 3rd Secretariat premises on Friday, December 19. While passing through the area, Lingbirth Arengh and Darmiki Langstang noticed suspicious behavior and quickly intervened. They managed to apprehend the individual attempting to steal the generator.
The guards immediately reported the incident to their superiors, and the suspect was handed over to officers from Sadar Police Station for further investigation. This swift action by the two guards highlights the critical role of vigilant security personnel in safeguarding public property.
In a similar act of vigilance earlier this week, alert locals in Assam’s Baksa district thwarted a brazen attempt to steal equipment from a mobile tower in Aohata. Two suspects, Mofidul Islam and Asadul Ali, from Khorishalar in Barpeta, were apprehended while descending from the tower, which was situated at Ranjit Kalita’s residence.
The duo, believed to have been involved in similar thefts at other mobile tower sites, faced the wrath of a local mob as they descended. The angry crowd physically assaulted the thieves before law enforcement arrived at the scene to take them into custody.
In another notable incident earlier this month, Guwahati police arrested a gang of five individuals suspected of being involved in a statewide grand theft auto operation. According to sources, the Crime Branch of Guwahati Police apprehended the suspects based on specific intelligence inputs. Although the details of the arrest remain undisclosed, it is known that the gang had been involved in vehicle thefts for several years, typically targeting parked vehicles in public areas.
These incidents underscore the power of alert and proactive citizens, as well as the critical role of security personnel, in curbing thefts and preventing larger criminal activities in Northeast India.
