A woman and her son have been booked for allegedly cheating a contractor of Rs6 lakh in a fraudulent land deal in Maharashtra’s Thane district, police said on Monday, citing a PTI report.
According to the Mira-Bhayandar, Vasai-Virar (MBVV) Police, the accused — Meena Narendra Mhatre and her son Manish Mhatre — approached the complainant in July 2018, offering to sell him a portion of their ancestral land.
Over a period of seven years, the duo allegedly collected Rs6 lakh in cash and cheques, promising to execute a sale deed for a plot worth Rs7 lakh in Bhayandar, an official said.
However, the investigation later revealed that the plot had already been transferred to a relative through a relinquishment deed, indicating deliberate deceit.
Following the revelation, a First Information Report (FIR) was registered against Meena and Manish Mhatre under sections 316(2) (criminal breach of trust) and 318(4) (cheating) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.
Police said that a probe is underway to trace the full extent of the fraud and recover the defrauded amount.
