CHATTONGRAM, Bangladesh — The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested Md Salauddin, 29, from Satkania upazila, for allegedly defrauding and blackmailing a Bangladeshi woman living in the United States, extorting over Tk 1.5 crore (approximately USD 125,000) through a fake marriage scheme.
According to the CID, Salauddin posed on Facebook as “Nadim Ahmed Suman,” claiming to be a Canada-based widower. He contacted the victim through the matrimonial page “BCCB Matrimonial: Heavenly Match” and gained her trust by arranging video calls, during which two accomplices posed as his mother and sister.
Authorities said Salauddin allegedly married the victim over a phone call and repeatedly extorted money under the promise of traveling to the United States. He also reportedly recorded objectionable video footage of the victim during video calls and threatened to share it online unless he was paid.
The CID stated that Salauddin had previously defrauded 80–85 women using similar methods. He was arrested from the Lohagara area of Chattogram following a case filed by the victim’s brother at Mirpur Model Police Station under the Penal Code and the Pornography Control Act, 2012.
Investigators noted that Salauddin had earlier faced charges for comparable crimes in Mohammadpur Police Station, had secured bail, and allegedly resumed his fraudulent activities.
CID officials are continuing their investigation into the suspect and any potential accomplices involved in this online romance scam.
