McElvaney was sentenced to 30 months in prison after a police stop uncovered drugs, a knife, and multiple driving offences.
The incident began when officers attempted to stop his vehicle, and McElvaney was tasered before being detained. Initially arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and failing to stop for police, further searches revealed a large knife, bags of white powder, pills, cash, and mobile phones.
Police system checks also led to his arrest for driving while disqualified and driving without insurance.
McElvaney first appeared at Teesside Magistrates’ Court on 20 October and was remanded in custody. On 18 December, he appeared at Teesside Crown Court and was sentenced for dangerous driving, possession of cocaine, possession of a knife, and failing to provide a sample.
Detective Chief Inspector Tom Sewell from Redcar CID said: “Mr McElvaney’s manner of driving that night undoubtedly placed other road users and pedestrians at significant risk. It was fortunate that our specially trained officers were able to bring the vehicle to a safe stop, with no injuries, although a police vehicle was damaged.”
