Cybercrime investigators apprehended Mayur Rabari, a resident of Kheda, on Thursday for allegedly assisting fraudsters in siphoning funds from unsuspecting victims. Rabari is reported to have been involved in such scams for several years.
Authorities revealed that a city-based businessman fell prey to a cyber-fraud syndicate, losing Rs 1.79 crore in a scheme promising high returns on stock market investments. The victim was persuaded to register on a fraudulent website and shown fabricated company documents, giving the scheme a facade of legitimacy.
Initially, the website displayed profits and even credited over Rs 2.22 lakh to encourage further investment. However, the victim realized he had been cheated when he attempted to withdraw his funds.
Police traced Rabari through technical surveillance and the bank accounts used for transferring the stolen money. He confessed to acting as a money mule, creating bank accounts under a fictitious company to channel the funds.
Further investigation revealed that more than 26 complaints had been filed against the account by victims across the country. Authorities are now working to identify the accomplices who helped Rabari set up the fraudulent company.
