Three men arrested for fatally hacking 34-year-old chef M Mohamed Haliq near Mayiladuthurai last month have been booked under the Goondas Act. Haliq, a resident of Needur, was attacked publicly on June 24 while chatting with friends and succumbed to his injuries the next day at Thanjavur Medical College Hospital.
The violent murder sparked protests in Mayiladuthurai, with locals demanding strict action against the culprits. Police detained four suspects: S Saranraj (28), R Vijay (28), V Vijendiran (25), and V Vijayakanth (25). Investigations confirmed the attack was driven by personal enmity.
The three main accused have been held in Central Prison for over a month. On Sunday, Mayiladuthurai SP G Stalin recommended that the accused be booked under the Goondas Act due to the threat posed to public peace. District Collector HS Srikanth approved the recommendation, and Inspector S Sivakumar formally registered the case.
