Maureen McFadden Warns Seniors of Medicare Scam in Marquette

Fake medical claims target seniors through ID theft schemes

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – A new Medicare-related scam is targeting older adults in Marquette, and local officials are urging residents to stay vigilant.

Maureen McFadden, the Senior Services Manager for the city, says there’s been a recent spike in fraudulent Medicare claims for medical supplies that seniors never requested — and often don’t need.

“We’re seeing claims for diabetic supplies and orthopedic braces, even for people who don’t have those medical conditions,” McFadden said. “These items appear on Medicare statements, and they’re completely unnecessary.”

While the immediate cost to victims might be minimal, McFadden warns that unchecked fraud could lead to higher premiums or other long-term impacts.

The scam involves identity theft, according to Detective Captain Christopher Aldrich of the Marquette City Police Department. Fraudsters often operate from outside the area, using stolen personal information to file false claims for financial gain.

“With Medicare scams, they’re using your name, Social Security number, and other personal details,” Aldrich said. “It’s a form of identity theft being exploited for profit.”

Seniors who notice unusual items on their Medicare statements are encouraged to take action — but not necessarily by calling the police.

“You don’t need to report it to law enforcement directly,” McFadden noted. “Just call 1-800-MEDICARE to report suspected fraud. Or, if you’re unsure, call us at the Marquette Senior Center and we’ll help you through the process.”

Aldrich added that safeguarding personal information remains the best defense against scams like these.
