OPELIKA, AL (WTVM) – A second suspect has been arrested in connection with a deadly shooting and robbery that took place last week in Opelika, Alabama.
On July 14, authorities arrested 35-year-old Maturius Maurice Daniel on multiple felony charges stemming from the incident, which occurred on July 10 in the 700 block of Herndon Street. Daniel faces the following charges:
Murder
Attempted Murder
First-Degree Robbery
First-Degree Burglary
Investigators say the incident began during a robbery involving Maturius Daniel, another suspect named Lark, and the victim, 20-year-old Deon Daniel. During the attempted robbery, a shootout erupted between the suspects and the resident of the home.
Gunfire was exchanged, resulting in the death of Deon Daniel. Authorities have not confirmed the relationship, if any, between Maturius and Deon Daniel, despite sharing a last name.
The investigation remains active as Opelika Police continue gathering evidence and questioning those involved.
Daniel was taken into custody without incident and is currently being held on the listed charges.
