KEOKUK, Iowa — A southeast Iowa man, initially charged with firearms violations, now faces a second-degree murder charge related to a fatal shooting last summer.
On Wednesday, the Keokuk Police Department arrested Matthew Thomas Miller, 27, of Keokuk, charging him with second-degree murder in connection to the July 28, 2024 shooting death of Colby Deck, 27, also of Keokuk.
After an extensive investigation, police found inconsistencies in Miller’s account of the incident. Miller initially claimed he fired a single shot from ground level near his vehicle after Deck allegedly struck his car. However, no shell casings were found in that area.
A casing was found inside Miller’s car, but forensic tests showed it was not fired from the gun Miller said he used.
Officers noticed an open second-story window at the residence where the shooting occurred. A shell casing was found in the rain gutter next to the window, and tests confirmed it was fired from Miller’s firearm.
Investigators concluded Miller fired the fatal shot from the second-story window, striking Deck in the chest. Police stated the shooting was intentional and unjustified, resulting in Deck’s death.
