Matthew Romell Cunningham, 38, of Tupelo, has been charged with two felonies after allegedly attacking two officers during his arrest on April 23. The altercation began when Tupelo police responded to a call at Helping Hands on South Church Street, where Cunningham had reportedly assaulted an employee.
Upon arrival, officers found Cunningham armed with a knife. When they attempted to arrest him, he fled the scene but was quickly apprehended. During the arrest, Cunningham allegedly kicked one officer in the face and spat on another.
As a result, Cunningham has been charged with two counts of simple assault on a law enforcement officer. Tupelo Municipal Court Judge Jay Weir ruled that Cunningham should be held without bond following his initial court appearance.
