BROCKTON, Mass. — Matthew Cunningham, 35, the choral director at Brockton High School, has been placed on administrative leave following his arrest on serious criminal charges, district officials confirmed Tuesday.
Cunningham, who also serves as the president-elect of the Massachusetts Chapter of the American Choral Directors Association, is facing multiple charges including sexual conduct for a fee and trafficking of a person for sexual servitude, according to court records. He entered a not guilty plea during his court appearance.
The charges stem from a lengthy investigation led by the FBI and the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office. Authorities allege that on April 27, Cunningham engaged in a sexual act with an underage male and then paid the victim via a digital payment app. The transaction was flagged and led to an investigation that resulted in a warrant issued Monday.
District Attorney Timothy Cruz confirmed that the charges followed a detailed inquiry into the case. “The safety and well-being of students is our highest priority,” said a Brockton Public Schools spokesperson. “We are ensuring the appropriate support and resources are available to the Brockton High School community.”
Cunningham’s bail was set at $25,000 cash. As part of his bail conditions, he must remain in Massachusetts, surrender his passport, and refrain from using social media.
A status hearing is scheduled for Thursday, with a probable cause hearing set for September 18.
