BALTIMORE – Maryland Attorney General Anthony G. Brown announced that Rhonda Keisha Powell, also known as Rhonda Keisha Jackson, 38, of Upper Marlboro, has been indicted on charges of felony insurance fraud, theft of property valued at $25,000 or more, and attempted theft of property valued at $100,000 or more. The charges stem from two separate fraudulent insurance claims Powell submitted under her renter’s policy with United States Automobile Association (USAA).
According to the indictment, Powell filed a claim in December 2020, alleging that flooding from a broken pipe in her home’s primary suite bathroom caused significant damage to her furniture, electronics, clothing, and jewelry. USAA paid Powell $58,373 for this claim.
In a second fraudulent claim filed in November 2022, Powell sought $124,034 in damages, again alleging water damage caused by a broken pipe. However, USAA denied the claim upon discovering that Powell had not reported any such damage to her landlord, and that supporting documents, including invoices, receipts, and photos, were falsified.
Powell is scheduled for an initial appearance in the Circuit Court for Prince George’s County on July 26, 2024.
A criminal indictment is an accusation, and Powell is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
