The Allen County Sheriff’s Office in Kentucky is investigating a phone scam that has already cost several residents thousands of dollars and has resulted in one arrest.
According to officials, a resident received a call claiming that a family member had been arrested and nearly $20,000 was needed to post bond and secure their release. Authorities say multiple residents have fallen victim to similar fraudulent calls in recent weeks.
The investigation led deputies to arrest 34-year-old Mary Saladin, who was booked into the Allen County Detention Center. She is charged with theft by deception, including passing a cold check valued at $10,000 or more.
Sheriff’s officials emphasize that the jail or sheriff’s office will never call residents to request money. They urge the community to remain cautious and skeptical of any calls demanding payment or personal information.
The investigation remains ongoing.
