Tallahassee, FL — The Leon County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) has arrested Marisa Humose, 48, the former treasurer of Greater Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church, on charges of grand theft and fraud.

According to deputies, Humose was taken into custody on November 3 following an investigation by LCSO’s Financial Crimes Unit into financial irregularities reported by the church’s leadership.

In June, the church’s pastor alerted authorities after noticing unauthorized transfers from the church’s Cash App account, a mobile payment service used to manage donations and funds.

Humose, who served as treasurer from 2022 to June 2025, had full access to the church’s bank and Cash App accounts, as well as responsibility for maintaining financial records. Investigators discovered that she had allegedly embezzled more than $70,000 during her tenure.

She was arrested and booked into the Leon County Detention Facility, charged with organized scheme to defraud and grand theft over $50,000.

Authorities also confirmed that Humose worked as an administrative assistant with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). She was terminated the same day as her arrest, following a separate internal investigation conducted by the FWC’s Office of Inspector General.

The Leon County Sheriff’s Office stated that the case highlights the importance of internal financial oversight within community organizations and encouraged other churches and nonprofits to monitor digital transactions closely.
