FLORIDA — A man wanted in several states for high-end jewelry theft was arrested Monday in Florida after police spotted a $40,000 Rolex on his 10-year-old son’s wrist.
Marcu Rostas, a 33-year-old Romanian national, was pulled over one day after allegedly robbing a jewelry store in Stuart, Florida, according to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office.
Rostas, who authorities say is part of a traveling network of distraction thieves, was accompanied by his wife and two children—both of whom were wearing luxury items believed to be stolen, including a $40,000 Rolex and a high-end necklace.
During the stop, deputies discovered even more stolen goods hidden inside the family’s vehicle, including:
A $40,000 diamond ring
Gold chains and coins
Deluxe watches
$30,000 in cash
A stash of items hidden in a stuffed animal
The total value of the stolen merchandise was estimated at $400,000.
Authorities also found multiple fake IDs and confirmed that Rostas is in the U.S. illegally. An ICE detainer was placed on him at the scene.
The sheriff’s office described Rostas as a member of a larger criminal ring often referred to as “traveling gypsies” — groups who use distraction tactics involving women and children to steal from stores, homes, and individuals.
“While one member distracts the victim, another quietly steals jewelry, cash, or other valuables within seconds,” said the Martin County Sheriff’s Office. “They hit jewelry stores, retail facilities, and sometimes private homes.”
Though formal charges are pending, Rostas is wanted in multiple states for similar offenses and is now being held in custody pending federal immigration proceedings.
