In a major narcotics bust, Tripura Police seized 325 kilograms of dried ganja from a house in Ananda Nagar, located in the Sonamura Sub-division of Sepahijala District, early Friday morning. The raid led to the arrest of one person, identified as Manjil Hossain, who allegedly stored the ganja for smuggling across the country.
The estimated market value of the seized cannabis is approximately Rs15 lakh.
Sonamura lies along a key stretch of the international border with Bangladesh, making it a hotspot for drug trafficking activities. The operation was conducted by a special police team led by Officer-in-Charge (OC) Jayanta Kumar Dey, following intelligence tip-offs. The team also included DCM Prabir Saha, Inspector Biplob Debbarma, SI Tapan Das, and Tripura State Rifles (TSR) personnel.
According to OC Dey, initial searches of the house yielded no results. However, acting on suspicion, the team began digging in the yard and discovered seven plastic drums buried underground, each packed with large quantities of dried ganja.
During initial interrogation, Manjil Hossain reportedly confessed that the ganja was meant for smuggling to different parts of India. He has been taken into custody, and further investigations are ongoing to uncover the full extent of the smuggling network.
“This operation is the result of our intelligence team’s relentless efforts,” said OC Jayanta Kumar Dey. “We are committed to a zero-tolerance policy against drugs, and such operations will continue.”
This bust marks one of the most significant seizures in recent months, emphasizing Tripura Police’s increasing efforts to combat the growing narcotics trade along India’s northeastern borders.
