In a major anti-drug operation, Meghalaya’s West Jaintia Hills Police arrested two individuals from Manipur and seized heroin worth Rs2.5 crore, following a tip-off that led to the interception of a suspicious vehicle near the Phramer Mer police traffic cell on Sunday night.
District Superintendent of Police Giri Prasad confirmed that the vehicle, en route from Khliehriat to Jowai, was found carrying 50 soap boxes filled with heroin weighing 512.63 grams. Alongside the drugs, authorities also recovered Rs6,775 in Indian currency and foreign notes, including 3,000 Korean Won.
The accused have been identified as Chuchung Serto from Kangpokpi district and Thanggin Towthang from Churachandpur district of Manipur. Both have been booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and are currently in police custody.
Authorities are now delving deeper into the supply chain and investigating possible cross-border connections, given the rising instances of drugs being trafficked through the Northeast region.
The police have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity that may be linked to drug trafficking networks.
