A man has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 19 years after stabbing his wife while she slept, believing she was having an affair.

Hai Van Nguyen, 42, attacked 44-year-old Hien Thi Vu, a mother of three, multiple times with a kitchen knife at their home in Hatfield Close, New Cross Gate, south-east London, on 13 April.

Nguyen initially admitted to manslaughter but denied murder. Following a trial at Woolwich Crown Court, he was convicted of the more serious charge.

Sentencing Nguyen, Judge Andrew Lees described the devastating impact on the family, noting that the three children had “lost their loving mother.”

In a victim impact statement read to the court, Hien Thi’s eldest son said he felt “heartbroken, angry and confused” over his mother’s tragic death.

The case highlights the devastating consequences of domestic violence and has left the family and local community in mourning.
