A man has been sentenced to 12 years and six months in prison for stabbing another man in York earlier this year.
Robert Elkes received his sentence at York Crown Court on 17 November following the attack on Walmgate, which left the 33-year-old victim with a collapsed lung. The sentence includes seven years and six months for wounding with intent and possession of a knife, plus five years on extended licence. Elkes was also sentenced for unrelated offences of robbery and fraud.
The incident occurred shortly after 12:15pm on 3 June, when the victim saw Elkes riding a bicycle and tried to escape. Elkes chased him and stabbed him in the chest with a Stanley knife, causing a one-inch wound that penetrated the lung. Dashcam and CCTV footage captured the attack.
After fleeing the scene, Elkes was identified on CCTV by a Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) from North Yorkshire Police and was quickly arrested. Police recovered a Stanley knife matching the weapon used and a white mountain bike similar to the one seen in the footage.
Although Elkes initially denied involvement and the victim was reluctant to engage, overwhelming evidence led to a guilty plea.
Detective Constable Alex Dorlin said: “This violent attack left the victim with a collapsed lung. Thanks to swift actions by response officers and CCTV analysis, the suspect was promptly arrested. This conviction demonstrates our commitment to tackling knife crime and keeping communities safe.”
